For the sake of their physical health, natural behavior stimulation, and general well-being, Black River Turtles—like Rhinoclemmys funerea—need chances to exercise within their environment. A way to keep these turtles active is as follows:
Black River Turtles spend much of their time swimming because of their watery habitat. Let the turtles swim freely in an open aquatic habitat with a depth of 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) so they may explore, forage, and interact with their surroundings as they would in the wild.
Enclosure or pond size should be sufficient for turtles to swim and move around freely. It is very uncommon for turtles to swim vigorously, especially while foraging for food or investigating new parts of their environment.
Floating platforms, boulders, or logs may serve as dry basking spots that can be incorporated into aquatic habitats. The turtles may simply jump out of the water and sunbathe in these spots lit by heat lamps or UVB lights. After a swim, it's a good idea to stretch and dry out by basking, which helps with thermoregulation.
The goal of implementing environmental enrichment is to promote active lifestyle choices and more natural behavior. Set out some floating items, living plants, or driftwood for the turtles to explore. Regular layout changes or the addition of new features encourage exploration and movement.
Foraging and Feeding: Use interactive feeding techniques to get turtles moving around as they hunt for food. Place food items, such turtle pellets or bits of veggies, on the water's surface or conceal them in various sections of the tank. To eat and hunt, turtles are encouraged to swim, dive, and forage vigorously, much as in the wild.
Diurnal means that they are more active during the day, and black river turtles are no exception. By presenting a range of stimuli and keeping the light cycle consistent, which mimics the body's natural day-night cycles, you may encourage regular activity intervals throughout the day. This encourages them to engage in healthy habits and helps control their level of exercise.
Learn your turtles' habits and likes by watching them closely. Interact with them when they eat or when you add things to their environment. To further pique their interest and inspire investigation, try gently nudging them or engaging with them from outside the cage.
