When compared to bigger and more powerful breeds, Cairn Terriers' biting force is rather mild. Their biting power is reported to be between 150 and 200 psi, however precise numbers may be hard to come by.
The size and form of the dog's jaws, the position of the teeth, and the muscular strength all have a role in the dog's bite power. Dogs bred specifically for hunting or working have bigger jaws and stronger muscles, thus their bite forces are naturally greater.
Cairn Terriers were first developed as working dogs for the purpose of capturing and killing tiny rodents and other pests. Their biting force is not as great as that of bigger hunting breeds, but they have the instinct and ability to grab and execute small animals.
To ensure a Cairn Terrier is well-behaved and doesn't display aggressive tendencies, early socialization and proper training are crucial. Regular exercise, mental stimulation, and positive reinforcement techniques can contribute to a well-behaved and happy Cairn Terrier.
