Dogs of all breeds, including the Cairn Terrier, normally start their reproductive phase and attain sexual maturity between the ages of six and twelve months. The age, general health, and hormonal development of an individual dog are just a few of the elements that influence when a Cairn Terrier will have sex and begin the breeding process.
About twice a year, female Cairn Terriers will go through their heat cycle, commonly known as estrus. The initial menstrual cycle typically starts between 6 and 12 months of age, but this timeframe is not fixed.
In heat, or pregnant, female Cairns show physical symptoms including a swollen vulva and bloody discharge. The fertile pairing up window typically spans between two and three weeks within the heat cycle.
However, male Cairn Terriers may reach sexual maturity and begin mating at a young age (about six to eight months). When they notice a female in heat, they may show greater fascination in females and start mounting behavior.
It is advised that dogs be bred after they have attained physical and mental maturity, which for Cairn Terriers is generally around the age of two. This allows for enough preparation and contemplation. Healthy, well-tested, and according to breed standards are essential for any dog intended for breeding.
