Cavalier King Charles Spaniels reach sexual maturity at about six to nine months of age, which is similar to many other dog breeds. When they reach this maturity level, they are sexually mature and capable of reproducing.

Dogs usually go through estrus, or breeding season, twice a year. It's worth noting, however, that certain Cavaliers may have atypical menstrual patterns due to natural variance. It is estimated that a female Cavalier's first heat cycle occurs anywhere from six to twelve months of age.

Female Cavalier spaniels go through noticeable changes in appearance and demeanour throughout their monthly heat cycle. The vulva may bulge, there may be a bloody discharge, the dog may urinate more often, and the dog may exhibit behavioural changes including greater restlessness or an increased need for attention from male canines. If you don't want your Cavalier to become pregnant, it's important to know these indications so you can take the necessary steps to stop it.

Dogs that won't be used for breeding often have their reproductive organs surgically removed by spaying or neutering. These measures not only protect your Cavalier from unwelcome pregnancies, but also have other positive effects on your pet's health.
