To encourage physical activity, mental stimulation, and natural behaviors in Chinese box turtles (Cuora flavomarginata), it is helpful to provide them with suitable toys and enrichment materials. Toys and enrichment should take the following into account:

Use natural materials like branches, smooth pebbles, and driftwood. These objects may be used for climbing, as areas to soak up some sun, and as things to investigate. Make sure everything is clean and non-toxic before adding anything to the turtle's tank.

Items Floating in Water: Turtles love playing with anything that float on the water's surface. You may enrich their water bowl or pond with floating cork pieces, aquatic plants, or some clean, non-toxic plastic toys. Inquisitive and engaging with these objects might stimulate turtles' minds and motivate them to swim.

Create chances for foraging by concealing rewards or food within the cage. Put commercially available turtle snacks, little bits of fruit or vegetables, or mealworms in a hide box or behind a rock. In addition to stimulating the turtle's senses, this encourages its natural foraging activity.

Make basic feeding puzzles out of items that are safe for the baby. For instance, you may train your turtle to nudge and move a tiny, clean plastic ball with holes to release food.

Adding diversity to feeding regimens while stimulating problem-solving abilities is the goal of this practice.

In order to encourage turtles to explore their environment, it is recommended to provide them with climbing devices. You may use things like piled pebbles, twigs, or even reptile climbing structures that you can buy at the store. Climbing is a great way to exercise and encourage natural behaviors in turtles, particularly those who are younger or more energetic.

Digging Spots: Chinese box turtles love to burrow on mushy ground. Make mounds of dirt or piles of coconut coir for digging. To promote digging activity and mental stimulation, bury things like clean, non-toxic plastic toys or snacks slightly under the surface.

To keep things interesting and avoid boredom, switch up the toys and enrichment materials on a regular basis. To keep the turtle interested and active, add new things or reorganize its current habitat. To find out which toys the turtle likes most, observe how it reacts to each one and change its enrichment routine appropriately.
