Whether kept inside or out in the open, it is important to provide the Chinese box turtle (Cuora flavomarginata) with water that is suitable for its needs. As a whole, these turtles need access to freshwater so they may drink, bathe, and stay hydrated. To properly care for Chinese box turtles, keep in mind the following:
Make sure the water is pure and doesn't include any harmful substances like heavy metals, chlorine, or ammonia. Fill their aquarium or water dish with dechlorinated water. If you must use tap water, give it a good soaking for at least a day to remove chlorine, or use a reptile-specific water conditioner.
It is important to provide Chinese box turtles with water that is deep enough for them to immerse themselves completely and soak. The ideal depth for a turtle's tank is just below its shell, but not too shallow; this will allow for simple access and escape.
Chinese box turtles like water between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius (72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit), however any temperature will do. In outdoor enclosures, where temperatures might vary, it is particularly important to use a thermometer to keep an eye on the water temperature.
To keep the water quality in a bigger pond or water feature, you may want to think about using a filtration system. To keep the water dish or pond clean and free of germs and unpleasant smells, clean it regularly by eliminating waste and detritus. To maintain its freshness, add water as required.
As a means of maintaining a constant internal temperature, aiding digesting, and hydrating, Chinese box turtles often engage in the behavior of soaking. To keep them from drowning and make it simple for them to get in and out of the water, make sure there's a flat surface or some pebbles for them to climb on in the water.
Lesions around the eyes, lack of energy, and parched skin are symptoms of dehydration. Insist on frequent bathing sessions, particularly when the weather is warm or just after eating.
When keeping Chinese box turtles outside, make sure they have access to a pond or shallow dish with water in it. Turtles need a safe place to drink water, where they can relax in the sun, and where they can find cover from predators.
