Madagascar is the place of origin. The Coton de Tulear is a cute dog that was originally found in Madagascar. There is evidence that they have been there for hundreds of years, and that they were initially bred as companion dogs for the island's nobles. The breed was named "Coton de Tulear," after the French term for cotton and the city of Tulear in Madagascar, where they were discovered in large numbers.
Coton de Tulears are little to medium in size, yet quite durable for their size. Their proportions are excellent, and their compact, muscular build gives them a feeling of poise and dexterity.
Coton de Tulear dogs are easily distinguished from other breeds by their fluffy, cottony coat. The texture and appearance of their fur is similar to a cloud of pure white or off-white cotton. This distinctive coat texture not only makes them seem beautiful, but also feels quite expensive to the touch.
