Properly maintained fish can live 2-3 years happily, although in some cases they survive 4-5 years. Research indicates that betta can live happily and stress-free in a large space with several gallons of water.
Things that determine betta is sick:
When betta gets sick, their color may fade or lose color.
Healthy betta have a whole fin whereas unhealthy betta may develop a rip or torn fin.
Normally, betta are highly active but when they become sick their movement slows down. Sometimes when they are sick, betta hide at the bottom of the tank like dead.
Observe better eating habits, when they are sick, they lose their appetites.
The betta shows white spots around the head and mouth.
The betta trying to rub and scratch the side of the tank may be they feel itching.
Some common diseases in samurai betta:
Fin Rot: it is an infection caused by bacteria and its symptom is fin tearing. The symptoms begin with a spot on the edges of the betta fin The consequence is losing the fin. The reasons behind the bacterial infection are poor water quality, low temperature which is below 78, and the build-up of toxic ammonia compounds. It commonly affects fish that have a weak immune system.
Dropsy: it is a bacterial infection. The symptoms are swelling of the belly area. They are resolved by water maintenance and over-the-counter medicines. The cures are also available for this disease.
Ich: the symptoms show a white spot on the body. It is caused by external parasites that irritate the skin. The symptom is itching on the skin, because of itching they scratch the body with an object placed in the tank, hence its name “ich.” The constant itching and scratches lead to a white spot all over the body. This also causes stress and, in extreme conditions, death. It is also caused by poor water quality.
Pop eye: popeye is a condition where both betta eyes bulge out. It is an underlying condition caused by bacterial infection and poor water conditions.
Precaution to prevent disease:
Always put the betta in a clean tank.
Change the water regularly. And filter the water in the tank.
Maintain a feeding schedule; do not overfeed it.
Ensure the tank condition and water parameters to prevent diseases.
